Key Stage 3 

  • Do you read a book a week? The English Department has devised a reading list for Years 7 to 11. How many of the books listed have you read?!
  • Do you use the library to search for books, poems and/ or plays by the writer that you are studying?
  • Do you read a broadsheet newspaper or listen to the news? Both of these activities will enable you to extend your vocabulary and will prepare you for GCSE
  • Do you contribute to whole class discussions? To excel you need to be able to formulate questions, respond to and build on the ideas of others
  • Do you complete extension tasks that ask you to analyse, synthesise or evaluate? These will help you to develop the writing skills required at GCSE and A Level
  • Do you use the literacy marking with green pens? 
  • Do you do spelling corrections three times?
  • Do you know how to use a full range of punctuation?

Key Stage 4 

  • Do you read a wide range of different text types?
  • Do you proof read your written work? Coursework tasks and examinations questions require a high level of accuracy
  • Do you plan?
  • Do you know how to extend and develop your analysis, using PEAL?
  • Do you refer back to model responses discussed in class?
  • Do you interrogate the mark scheme so that you know exactly what you need to show?
  • Do you record and learn new terminology?
  • Do you wait to be told to make notes, read another chapter or complete another past paper question? Independent learning is vital
  • Do you contribute to whole class discussions? Being able to articulate and justify a point of view is an important skill
  • Do you look for cross curricular and subject links? This is a good skill to have.
  • Do you participate in the extra-curricular opportunities on offer?
  • Have you spoken to your English teacher about studying English at A Level

Key Stage 5 

Your A Levels prepare you for the world of work or further education. With this in mind, the way that you approach the course should be different.

  • Do you take ownership of your learning? It is expected that you read all of the books listed on the course reading lists.
  • Do you keep a reading log? Record extra books, articles or journals
  • Do you record and learn new terminology?
  • Do you research the context of production/ context of reception?
  • Do you participate in class discussions? It is important that you share what you know with others.
  • Think about joining and using a public library
  • Don’t forget to talk to your teacher!
