What is A Level Dance?

A/S Dance is an exciting course that introduces you to a world of dance through discovery, creativity and performance. You will study many aspects of dance including: The dancer as performer, the Process and Craft of choreography, the significance of dances: own work and that of professional repertoire, the process of solo choreography from investigation and research of ideas through outcome, the development of physical and interpretative skills in relation to performance of the solo choreography and the development of performance skills within a duo/ trio performance context

The course prepares you for year 2 which builds upon skills and knowledge developed in the A/S qualification

What's assessed

• Solo performance linked to a specified practitioner within an area of study

• Performance in a quartet

• Group choreography


What's assessed

Knowledge, understanding and critical appreciation of two set works.

• One compulsory set work within the compulsory area of study

• One optional set work within the corresponding area of study, from a choice of four.

How it's assessed

• Practical exam

• 80 marks

• 50% of A-level

How it's assessed

• Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes

• 100 marks

• 50% of A-level


What skills will I gain from studying A/S Dance?

You will develop:-

  • your ability to self and peer assess against a criteria so as to improve in all areas of dance
  • skills as a dancer, choreographer, technician and thinking dancer
  • an appreciation of the different dance styles/ genres by placing them into historical and social context
  • even more of a love for dance than you started the course with J
